An observation from a veteran rocker, the financial backing of a community-minded auto dealership and the planning expertise of an area production company came together a few years ago to start Rockin’ the Shores Beer and Music Festival.
The popular event returns Saturday to the streets of downtown St. Clair Shores for a day of two stages of live music, games, food and beverages.
Julie Law, a longtime Detroit radio marketing rep and her firm 360 Event Productions, said the idea stemmed from a talk with Vinnie Dombroski of Sponge fame, about the lack of a premier event in his hometown of St. Clair Shores.
“Vinnie said ‘I’ve toured all over the United States, I can’t believe I haven’t played my own hometown.’ And we talked about doing something and got Mark O’Brien (owner of Roy O’Brien Ford), who said he would support it,” Law said Thursday.
In 2016, the O’Brien Ford dealership hosted Rockin’ the Shores by moving all of the vehicles off the grounds and opened the area to the party. A few years later, it moved onto the streets in the area of Nine Mile Road and Mack Avenue.
“It really has become a great event since then,” Law said.
Saturday’s event will run 1-11 p.m. and is headlined by Brett Scallions of Fuel and hometown favorites Sponge.
The lineup also includes a number of local rock bands performing original music, including Ricky’s Rat Pack, Orbitsuns, Visitors Dead in 5, Dark Eyed Dreamers, Loxodon and others.
But no festival is complete without food and beverages. Food trucks from BBQ Daddy, Grampie’s Clam Shel and Senors will be on hand. There also will be a full bar featuring craft beer, Tito’s Handmade Vodka, Markers Mark and the new Jim Beam Orange.
Festival-goers can also play cornhole, Jenga and Connect 4 in the Faygo Fun Zone.
Sponsors include Roy O’Brien Ford, Tito’s Handmade Vodka, Makers Mark, Faygo, and Petitpren.
This is an all-ages event until 9 p.m., then it’s 21 and over. Cover is $5. There’s free parking in surrounding lots.
