No one injured following early morning fire in Breathitt County

JACKSON, Ky. (WYMT) - A day that started off like any other is now one the Breathitt County community won’t forget.

City of Jackson Fire Officials said they received a report of a fire around 2:43 a.m. Along with the City of Jackson firefighters, crews from Watts-Caney Fire and Rescue and Wolfe Creek Fire and Rescue responded.

“The first unit to arrive on scene they located heavy fire, coming out of the rear of the structure, heavy smoke coming out of the front of the two buildings that are burnt,” said City of Jackson Fire Chief Chase Deaton.

Deaton said multiple buildings resulted in damages.

“Two buildings are a total loss. We’re very fortunate to save one adjacent building. It did have a little bit of smoke and some minor heat damage but it is savable,” he said.

In a Facebook post, City of Jackson officials said they were “heartbroken” for the loss of the two historic buildings on Main Street.

For Tracy Patrick, the fire hits close to home because engulfed in flames was her sister’s business, Petals Flowers and Home.

“She just really pours out into everything she does and it just really breaks my heart to see this happen,” she said.

Patrick added that she is not sure how to help going forward.

“Helpless, I don’t know how to help her,” she said. “I’m the florist there with her and just my main thing is just to keep her going and her spirits high.”

While there was loss, the community looks to rebuild. They are spreading words of gratitude to the firefighters who came to help their community in need.

“I thank God everyday that they’re out here… that they’re willing,” said Member of the Jackson City Council Mildred Lee Roberts. “They rush to what we rush away from,”

Patrick is also hopeful for the future.

“That just means the world to me and I just want to see my sister land back on her feet and just pick up where we left off yesterday when we locked the door,” she said.

Deaton said the fire is still currently under investigation.

He said everyone made it out safely.
