Oklahoma is sitting pretty when it comes to cost of living for college students. The coasts are the most expensive, which was expected, but even though college is a big expense, picking a place with lower cost of living could help college students keep debt down.
"It's going to really impact their quality of life if they are going to spend too much money on a place to live -- or really anyone on general-- if you are going to spend too much money on a place to live, it is really going to impact your ability to do other things in the community," says Brian Carberry, senior managing editor, Apartment Guide.
Comfortable, safe, and within your means is the goal. For non-college students, there is the 30% rule-- meaning no more than 30% of your income before taxes should go to housing. It can be more difficult for students to stick to this idea, but having a plan upfront can help students understand how far their finances could get them.
"They really just need to do a budget and come up with an idea of their estimated expenses each month and they can base it on that," says Carberry.

The best way to save money as a college student is to have roommates. Perhaps unsurprisingly, South and Midwest are most affordable. Norman, Oklahoma lands on the top 10 cheapest college towns at number 10.
Stillwater was not included in this data because Apartment Guide says there was no available three bedroom apartment data, but did add that if it had been included, it would have likely been in the top five most affordable. One bed room apartments in Stillwater would have been the cheapest of all the schools on the list.
