Rally held to support victims
Like all cities and communities around the country, the local area observed National Day of Prayer Friday in various ways and continued throughout the weekend and on into this week to express its sympathy for, and desire to help, the victims of last Tuesday’s terrorist attacks.
30 Years Ago — 1991
First regatta held
The first-ever Pend Oreille Hydro regatta, held on the Pend Oreille River between the bridge and Kelly Island, is now mostly only a memory for the racers, spectators and several workers who put the event together. Regatta committee members reported that all in all the memory is a pleasant one. Committee member Charlie Brown said, “The racers seemed to be happy with it … and property owners along the river have already extended an invitation for next year.”
40 Years Ago — 1981
Arson is believed to be the cause of three fires in the Blanchard area, one of which blackened four acres and threatened several homes, Department of Lands officials said. The four-acre fire and two other spot fires were started at about 4:30 p.m. The four-acre blaze ignited on the Wain Geaudreau property. The wind-whipped flames moved fast. About 50 neighbors and passersby assisted in battling the blaze, also DOL fire units, Merritt Bros., Diamond International and West Pend Oreille Fire District

A group of 25 Happy Agers took a boat trip on Lake Coeur d’Alene and up the St. Joe River to St. Maries on Sept.1.

Promoted
Marguerite M. Killian, Priest River, has been appointed office manager at Diamond National’s Albeni Falls office, the position formerly held by Laurence B. Forseth, who is now manager of the Albeni Falls unit. A “native daughter” Mrs. Killian has 19 years office experience in the logging and lumbering industry locally. Forseth has worked for Diamond eight years.

Foresters from afar visit
Thirty-six of the world’s outstanding foresters, representing 23 United Nations countries, arrived in the territory Friday night to launch a six-week study of methods used in the United States to prevent and combat forest fires. They will spend 13 days in the Inland Empire. The tour went into the Kaniksu National Forest in the Priest Lake district Saturday. In that area, the group viewed actual fire control practices and viewed Diamond Match logging operations and the Experiment Station at Priest River.

Auditorium gets go-ahead
At a special meeting of the school directors of Independent School District No. 13, the board decided to go ahead with the construction of the high school (now junior high) auditorium. Work on the gymnasium continues at a good rate.

Only 35 cents and one hour of your time will entitle you to the pleasure of seeing the first football game of the season when Priest River tangles with Milan Friday at 1:30 p.m.

New slaughter house built
The People’s Meat Market is erecting a new slaughterhouse at the Charles Carr house on the Newport Ferry road.
