53 new COVID-19 cases, 4 deaths on Cape and Islands

The state Department of Public Health said in its daily report Thursday that Massachusetts had 1,999 newly confirmed cases of COVID-19, including 53 on the Cape and Islands. 

Since the pandemic began, the state has had 736,279 confirmed COVID-19 cases. 

There were four new deaths caused by COVID-19 in Barnstable County over the course of the past week. There were no new deaths reported in Dukes and Nantucket counties last week.  

Barnstable County had 46 newly confirmed cases of coronavirus Thursday for a total of 16,273 since last March.  

Dukes County on Martha’s Vineyard had five new cases Thursday for a total of 1,764 to date. Nantucket County had two new cases over the past week and has had a total of 1,872 coronavirus cases. 

The state Department of Public Health said that 675 people in Massachusetts were hospitalized with COVID-19, including 173 patients in intensive care units, 97 of whom were intubated. 

The state started reporting the number of hospitalized patients who were vaccinated on Aug. 18. As of Sept. 11 there were 4,549,497 fully vaccinated people and there were 27,777 cases in vaccinated people, 823 of those 27,777 cases resulted in hospitalization and 194 cases resulted in death based on information reported to date 

State public health officials said that as of Wednesday, Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis had 14 coronavirus patients, with one patient in intensive care. Falmouth Hospital had six COVID-19 patients, with three patients in the intensive care unit. 

Martha’s Vineyard Hospital had no COVID-19 patients. Nantucket Cottage Hospital had one COVID-19 patient. 

There were 149 new probable cases of COVID-19 for a total of 52,496 probable cases since March 2020, according to Thursday’s report. 

Across Massachusetts, there were 16 new deaths of people with confirmed cases of coronavirus, making for a total of 18,046 fatalities statewide among confirmed cases since March 2020. 

State public health officials said Thursday there were no deaths among probable cases, while the total number of fatalities of people with probable cases stands at 378. 

State public health officials said 124,355 new molecular tests have been conducted. They said the seven-day average positivity rate is 2.30%. 

As of Sept. 14, 73% of the state’s population had received at least one dose of vaccine, compared to 63% of the national population. 

The cumulative percentage of individuals who are fully vaccinated in Barnstable County is 72%. In Martha’s Vineyard, it is 90% and on Nantucket, it is at 89%. 

For those who are eligible to receive the vaccine, age 12 or older, Barnstable County is at 79% vaccinated, Dukes County is 102% vaccinated and Nantucket is at 103%. 

Percent Positivity is calculated using molecular tests only by dividing the number of positive tests by the total number of tests during the time period.  

Barnstable County over the last 14 days has had a percent positivity of 4.07%, while the state’s 14-day percent positivity is 2.35%
