While Southern Lee football has been sidelined for more than a week due to COVID-19 protocols, the Cavaliers have still been able to compete in fútbol.
Southern’s soccer team faced another big challenge on Wednesday evening, when 4A Hoke County came to town for a Sandhills Conference matchup. Both teams came in near the top of the conference in the early going, but the Bucks pulled out a 2-1 victory that dropped the Cavaliers to 2-2 in the conference.
Hoke County (9-2 overall, 3-1 Sandhills) had not been expected to be a contender this season, but sent an early message when it proved competitive in the power-packed Cary Kickoff Classic in August. The Bucks won a game for the first time ever in that event. Their only conference loss came in a match at Lee County a week ago. Against Southern, they got two goals from Ailton Tirardo-Martinez, which were enough to trump a goal by the Cavaliers’ Isaac Mireles and get the win.
Southern chose midfielder Hugo Aguirre as its Player of the Match.
Southern Lee got a strong effort in goal from senior Daniel Diaz, but Hoke’s Declan Callahan made five saves to hold the Cavaliers (5-3, 2-2 Sandhills) off.
Lee and Pinecrest entered a match with each other on Thursday tied for first place in the conference at 2-0. They were supposed to play on Wednesday but moved the game back one day. Hoke is third, and Southern stands in fourth, but second to Lee among the 3A teams. Union Pines beat Scotland earlier in the week to stand in fifth, but the Scots and their arch-rival Richmond are both winless in conference.
The Cavaliers will step out of conference play on Monday for a trip to Athens Drive.
