TUSTIN — Ayala dominated Tustin on both sides of the ball in a 42-7 nonleague football win Thursday at Tustin High.

Tustin (3-2) was held to 40 yards rushing and struggled to give quarterback Tobey Schmidt time to throw the ball.

“They (Ayala) got some big guys and they controlled the line of scrimmage,” Tustin coach Anthony Lopez said. “Even when we got good running plays we shot ourselves in the foot with penalties. It was just one of those nights.”

Schmidt completed 17 of 28 passes for 184 yards and orchestrated a nice 60-yard scoring drive to finish the first half. He rushed for a 2-yard touchdown for the Tillers’ only score.

Dominick Flores was Schmidt’s favorite target but Ayala was able to tackle him right when he caught the ball to avoid big plays. Flores caught eight passes for 77 yards.

It was a breakout game for Ayala’s sophomore quarterback, Bryan Wilson. He completed 12 of 18 passes for a career-high 289 yards and had three touchdown passes. He also ran for two touchdowns on quarterback sneaks.

“I think it was my best game so far this year,” Wilson said. “It was a good game overall. A lot of guys got involved and we did really well.”

Wilson received his first scholarship offer from Florida State on Aug. 21.

“Their quarterback is good. They found their mismatches, took their shots and completed most of them,” Lopez said of Wilson and Ayala. “They have a really good football team. They look the part and play the part.”

After scoring the first touchdown on a quarterback sneak, Wilson threw deep touchdown passes to Drew Merrill and Dominic Alloway from 86 and 40 yards out, respectively, to give Ayala a 21-0 lead early in the second quarter. Alloway caught four passes for a game-high 130 yards.

CJ Sento ran for a 1-yard touchdown to extend Ayala’s lead to 28-0.

Wilson ran for his second touchdown of the game on the opening drive of the second half to make the score 35-7 in Ayala’s favor. He threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Samuel Moran in the fourth to finish the game.

Jayden Colvin led Ayala’s defense and had two sacks. He also played on the offensive line that allowed zero pressure on Wilson.

“They are great. I am buying them In-N-Out for that performance,” Wilson said of his offensive line. “I can’t talk about them enough.”

Ayala has a bye week next week before wrapping its nonleague schedule on the road against La Habra.

Tustin also has a bye week before beginning its Empire League schedule against Pacifica on Friday, Oct. 1. The Tillers are going to use the bye week to evaluate themselves and get some rest.

“We need to tackle better, bottom line,” Lopez said of Tustin’s first half of the season. “In order for us to do what we want to do and win a league and CIF championship, we have to tackle or it’s going to be a long season. It’s a really good league.”
