Sung Kang Teases ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ Role

Sung Kang (The Fast & Furious franchise) recently spoke to Screen Rant about his upcoming role in the Obi-Wan Kenobi series, starring Ewan McGregor (Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith) and Hayden Christensen (Jumper). While things have been hush-hush about the upcoming series, Kang revealed details about his role in the series, including revealing that his character will wield a lightsaber.

Obi-Wan Kenobi will pick up ten years after the events of Episode III with Obi-Wan watching over a young Luke Skywalker on Tatooine. The series is set to feature a rematch between Obi-Wan and his former padawan-turned-Sith Anakin Skywalker — now known as Darth Vader.

Not much is known about the series, and fans have been scraping for as much information as they can. Kang’s casting was first announced in March. Sitting down with Screen RantKang talked about the role and what fans can expect from his character and his excitement for joining the Star Wars universe.

“I used to dress up in the cheap K-mart plastic Halloween costumes, Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader, almost every single day from 8 to 13 years old,” Kang told Screen Rant. “My friends and I would play pretend, we’d make our own lightsabers out of, you know, toilet paper centers and stuff like that…To be able to be on set and see Darth Vader and see the Star Wars universe in front of me…just as a fan, to be able to be a part of that history is pretty amazing. I kept pinching myself going, ‘How did I end up here?’ And my character has a lightsaber, [and] it’s not a toy, it’s actually the real thing.”

With news of Kang’s character having a lightsaber, fans are left with plenty of room to speculate what he could be playing. Did he survive Order 66? Could Kang be playing an Inquisitor? There is a lot that fans can theorize on and how he may fit into the narrative of the story.

Filming for Obi-Wan Kenobi began in May, but a release date has not been announced for the series. Obi-Wan Kenobi will stream exclusively on Disney+.
