STEVENSVILLE — A malfunctioning air compressor caused a Kent Island house fire Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 8, according to a press release from the Maryland State Fire Marshal.
Thirty firefighters from the United Communities Volunteer Fire Department arrived at the 300 block of Five Farms Drive in Stevensville at approximately 3:32 p.m. responding to a 911 call placed by a passing neighbor.
The neighbor, who used a garden hose to try and suppress the flames before the firefighters’ arrival, was credited with minimizing the severity of the fire damage, which is estimated at causing $15,000 in structural and material costs.
The house, a single family dwelling, was unoccupied at the time of the fire. There were no injuries or deaths reported by the State Fire Marshal’s office.
According to the release, the root of the fire was an air compressor on the outside of the house’s attached garage. Because the flames were isolated to the building’s exterior, the smoke alarms inside the home did not activate.
Once volunteer firefighters arrived on the scene, it took them 25 minutes to control the fire.
The fire was ruled an accident by the State Fire Marshal.
