It was a bloody afternoon in Columbus Thursday as two people were killed in separate shootings, one on the west side of the city, the other in a near-campus neighborhood. The homicides are the 150th and 151st of 2021.
Hannah Blau lives a half-block from the shooting that happened in an alley between 19th and 20th Avenues, just off Fourth Street in a neighborhood near Ohio State University’s campus. Blau said she didn’t even realize that police were investigating a shooting that happened around 3:10 p.m.
“It is alarming because I have my dog with me, I walk right up the street every day, right past that alley,” she said.
The victim died a half-hour later at Grant Medical Center. Police have not released an identity at this time.
Blau said she hadn’t been worried about crime before.
“It hasn't really caused me any worry,” she said. “I know that there are crime alerts that go out.”
Ohio State sent out one of those alerts in the evening, saying the victim was not an OSU student or staffer. But the shooting did happen in an area with a lot of student rentals.
Hours after the victim died, police were on the scene of another shooting, at an apartment complex on the west side at Floral Circle South. One person was hit by gunfire and died less than an hour later. Police have not released an identity in that murder.
Just before 11 p.m., a third fatal shooting took place on the near east side of Columbus near Nationwide Children's Hospital.
