Hospitals dispute firefighters' claims that EMTs see more with vaccine reactions than COVID-19

Hospitals dispute firefighters' claims that EMTs see more with vaccine reactions than COVID-19
JIM: WESH 2 IS COMMITTEDO T GETTING YOU THE FACTS ON THE VAX. RECENTLY WHILE SPEAKING OUT ABOUT ORANGE COUNTY’S VACCINE MANDATE FOR ITS WORKERS, SOME ORANGE COUNTY FIREFIGHTERS SAID THEY WERE TAKING MORE PATIENTS TO THE HOSPITAL WITH VACCINE SIDE EFFECTS THAN PEOPLE WITH CORONAVIRUS. SUMMER: WESH 2’S BOB HAZEN WENT TO ADVENTHEALTH TO ASK TMHE DIRECTLY IF THAT WAS TRUE. BO OB:RANGE COUNTY FIREFIGHTERS AND EMTS ARE THE FIRST HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS FOR MANY PEOPLE WHEN THEY SUFFER SERIOUS MEDICAL ISSUES. THESE DAYS, THAT OFTEN MEANS COVID. BUT SOME FIREFIGHTERS WHO ARE PROTESTING T CHEOUNTY'S REQUIREMENT THAT ALL EMPLOYEES GET THE COVID VACCINE ARE SOUNDING ALARMS ABOUT THE SHOT. AT THIS WEEK'S COUNTY COISMMSION MEETING, THEY SAID THEY ARE RESPONDING TO LARGE NUMBERS OF PEOPLE SUFFERING MEDALIC COMPLICATIONS AFTER GETTING THE VACCINE. >> I TRANSPORT MORE PEOPLE, MORE CENTRAL FLIDORA BROTRSHE AND SISTERS, THAT ARE VACCINATED WITH ISSUES, ADVERSE REACTIONS, OR WITH COVID, THAN I DO VAUNCCINAT.ED >> ON A DAILY BASIS, DISPATCH RECEIVES AN EXCESSIVE AMOUNT OF 911 CALLS REGARDING VACCINE REACTIONS. BOB: WESH 2 HAS BEEN LOOKING INTO THOSE CLAIMS, AND WE ASKED CENTRAL FLORIDA'S BIGGEST HO SPITALYS STEMS IF THAT’S WHAT THEY’RE SEEING. >> THE ANSWER ISO. N BOB: ADVENTHEALTH OFFICIALS SAY AT THE SYSTEM'S HOSPITALS AND CENTRA CARE LOCATIONS, THEY ARE NOT DEALING WITHERIOUS S PROBLEMS. >> WE HAVE NOT SEEN INCREASED COMPLICATIONS OR VISITS TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM POST VACCINES. IN OUR URGENT CARE CENTERS, AT MOST WE'LL SEE THE TYPICAL SIDE EFFECTS OF ARM SORENESS OR MBEAY FATIGUE AND FEVER AFTERWARDS, BUT WE SEE THE SAME THING AFTER THE FLU SHOT. BOB I ASKED ORLANDO HEALTH, AS : WELL. THEY WOULD NOT GIVE ME A DIRECT RESPONSE TO THE QUESTION, TBU INSTEAD SENT A STATEMENT SAYING THAT FAILING TO GET VACCINATED IS THE BIGGEST PREDICTOR OF SERIOUS ILLNESS AND DEATH FROM COVID-19. I ALSO CHECKED WITH ORANGE COUNTY FIRE RESCUE ABOUT WHETHER THE 911 CALL CENTER HAS SEEN A LARGE AMOUNT OF VACCINE REACTION CALLS. AN AGENCY SPOKESWOMAN SAYS THEY DON'T HAVE ANY SPECIAL CLASSIFICATION FOR COVID-RELATED CALLS, SO THEY HAVE NO INFORMATION ABOUT IT. THERE IS ONE PLACE TO FIND REPORTS OF POSSIBLE PROBLEMS- - THE CDC’S VACCINE ADVERSE EVENT REPORTING SYSTEM, OR VAERS, WHICH IS AVAILLEAB ONLE.IN WHEN HOSPITALS DO DEAL WITH VACCE INADVERSE REACTIONS, THEY REPORT THEM TO VAERS. BUT THE DATABASE HAS SOME MAJOR LIMITATIONS -- ANYONE CAN REPORT REACTIONS TO IT, AND TSEHO REPORTS CAN BE UNVERIFIED OR JUST WRONG, PLUS THERE’S NO CONFIRMATION THAT ANY REACTION REPORTED ACTUALLY HAD ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE SHOT. IT COULD BE JUST A COINCIDEN.CE EVEN SO, I SEARCHED IT FOR REPORTS AFTER THE MODERNA DAN PFIZER SHOTS THAT LED TO HOSPITALIZATION, ER VISITS, DAN DEATH IN FLORIDA. THERE WERE OVER 4000 RESULTS- - SOME WERE SERIOUS, ALTHOUGH MANY WERE FOR MINOR REACTIONS AND THE PATIENTS RECOVERED. THAT NUMBER, THOUGH, IS MINISCULE COMPARED TO TH13E MILLION FLORIDIANS WHO HAVE BEEN VACCINATED, AND HOSPITALS SAY ANY RISK IS FAR OUTWEIGHED BY THE BENEFIT. >> WE’RE NOT SEEING A LOT OF REACTIONS. THIS IS A VERY SAFE VACC

Some Orange County firefighters who are protesting the county’s requirement that all employees get the COVID-19 vaccine are sounding alarms about the shot, but hospital officials say they are not seeing problems with the vaccines. This week, some firefighters told county commissioners they are responding to large numbers of people suffering medical complications from the vaccine. “I transport more people, more Central Florida brothers and sisters, that are vaccinated with issues, adverse reactions, or with COVID than I do unvaccinated,” Wendy Williams said. “On a daily basis, dispatch receives an excessive amount of 911 calls regarding vaccine reactions,” firefighter Jason Wheat said.WESH 2 looked into those claims, reaching out to Central Florida’s biggest hospital systems. “The answer is no, we’re not seeing a lot of reactions,” Dr. Tim Hendrix with AdventHealth Centra Care said. “This is a very safe vaccine.” “We have not seen increased complications or visits to the emergency room post vaccines,” said Dr. Neil Finkler, AdventHealth’s chief clinical officer. Orlando Health would not directly answer the question of whether it has seen a large number of adverse reactions to the vaccine, but issued the following statement:“It has been our experience that failing to get vaccinated is the biggest predictor of serious illness and deaths from COVID-19. Orlando Health continues to strongly encourage the community to obtain a COVID vaccine, which can also assist with preventing the spread of the virus that causes COVID-19.” WESH 2 also asked Orange County for 911 call records related to any vaccine reactions, but a spokeswoman said the agency does not have any special classifications for COVID-19-related calls, so there are no records available. There is one place to find reports of possible problems: the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS). The database has several limitations, including that anyone can submit a report, which can be unverified and incomplete. There is also rarely confirmation that the reaction being reported is directly caused by the vaccine, instead of coincidental. Health care providers are required to report deaths and life-threatening reactions to VAERS. WESH 2 searched the database for reactions to the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines reported in Florida, specifically those that resulted in deaths, hospitalizations, emergency room visits, or were life-threatening. VAERS returned more than 4,000 results; some were very serious illnesses, others were very minor and the patients were discharged quickly. The Florida Department of Health says more than 13,000,000 people in the state have been vaccinated.
