OAKLAND — A 41-year-old Hayward man was shot and killed Thursday afternoon in an East Oakland neighborhood, authorities said.

His name was not immediately released.

Shortly after 3:55 p.m. Thursday, police responded to reports of a shooting near 57th Avenue and Foothill Boulevard.

When officers arrived, they found the man on 57th Avenue suffering from at least one gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.

Police said the man was shot by someone who confronted him on the street. The suspect fled in a vehicle before police arrived.

Police did not release a motive for the shooting or say what they believed the slain man was doing in Oakland.

The killing is the 94rd homicide investigated by Oakland police this year, and the sixth since Sept. 9. Last year at this time police had investigated 69 homicides in the city. There were 109 total homicides in the city last year.
