The East Syracuse Minoa boys soccer team wanted to make sure its coach, Mark Carr, earned his 200th career win at home. The Spartans delivered a 7-2 victory over Central Square in a SCAC Empire division game on Thursday.
Behudin Malkic scored two goals and Eric Markert, Caleb Tedesco, Todd Durantini, Garrett O’Donnell and Evan deBerjeois all notched one goal each.
Carr, who is entering his 18th season of coaching, reflected on this accomplishment and his career.
Why did you decide to coach boys soccer?
“I decided to get into coaching 30 years ago during my freshman year of college as a part-time job. I got into coaching because I wanted to follow in my dad’s footsteps. He coached at Fabius-Pompey in basketball for over 30 years, soccer for 17 years, and I hope to catch up to his three sectional titles in soccer.”
What do you like most about coaching boys soccer at ESM?
“I love the style that we have developed at ESM. Players that play with passion and skill who are hard-nosed and never give up. People don’t always love playing against us, but you have to respect how hard the kids play.”
Can you tell me about your most memorable moment in coaching?
“The sectional semifinal win against Jamesville-DeWitt in 2011. They were one of the top-ranked teams in the state and we were a 5 seed. We played with such passion and determination and pulled it out in PKs and went on a run to the state semifinals.”
