AUDIO | 21-year-old West Bend man severely injured in power pole accident during class at MATC

September 16, 2021 – West Bend, WI – A prayer chain has been started at Community Church in West Bend for a 21-year-old West Bend man who was severely injured during a class at Milwaukee Area Technical College in Mequon.

The accident happened Wednesday, September 15, 2021. Below is the 911 call to Mequon Police.

The 911 call indicates “a line snapped.”

Dispatch said: “You’re being requested at the MATC in Mequon for a pole wire that has snapped with line down and possible injury.

Dispatch continues… “The injury is his leg, he was hanging upside down and his leg is black.”

According to Mequon police:

The incident happened at the MATC Mequon campus at 10 a.m. A 21-year-old was on a pole when it snapped at the base.

The class at MATC is an Electrical Power Distribution/ Line Mechanic course. The class description indicates the program prepares students for “entry-level electrical line worker positions.”

The program notes students must be physically fit and coordinated and have the “ability to climb without fear of heights.”

MATC issued a statement about the incident.

The man is currently in ICU at Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee. His injuries are extensive.

Mark Fechter with Community Church said the young man’s family are parishioners at the church on S. Main Street in West Bend.

“My son went through that same class many years ago,” said Fechter. “Definitely it is important to keep the man and his family in your prayers.”

Fechter said his son went to lineman school safety was always stressed. “When my son was there they had to climb a 60-foot pole and that’s pretty high.”

The 21-year-old man is a 2018 graduate of the West Bend High Schools.

  1. I am a 2007 graduate…definitely a dangerous coarse. We didn’t use fall restraints then. Hope he recovers soon! BTW the tallest pole was 60 foot not 90

  2. Our prayers to the family that all his health restored. This is dangerous stuff they do and when you have a family member who is a lineman you appreciate and respect their job.
