Realm of Memories: My Skyward Sword dream

I’m a bit of a restless sleeper. I often wake up several times in the same night, sometimes around three or five in the morning, and I can sometimes remember more than one dream once I really have to wake up. For that reason, I thought it would be fun to write them down in a notebook, just to see if I would start to notice a pattern or dream of any good ideas worth saving. Sometimes, my dreams are nonsense and hardly worth remembering but other times, they can be quite eventful and beautiful.

Around the week of Skyward Sword HD’s release, I woke up from a dream I had during an early evening nap, and I quickly wrote it down before I forgot all the details. I thought I would share that dream with you today.

The sky was clear and the grass was green high up in the windy skies, and Zelda stood in her white dress with the Master Sword in her hand. Next to her stood Link, dressed in the green tunic he got from the Knight Academy, and a small boy who I just knew was their child. As Zelda raised the sword skyward, the ground crumbled and disappeared, and they fell through the clouds. Soon after, the sky went black and there was no telling what was up or down, right or left, but something could be seen in the distance. Something similar to shooting stars, but they were red and golden and flew towards the trio, like flaming arrows aimed at an enemy.

Not knowing what the lights were, Link and Zelda took the child with them and ran to take cover somewhere in the blackness. But there was nothing there to shield them, and once the lights hit the pitch-black ground, they shattered into a glimmering powder of gold. The powder wasn’t hurting them but Link thought that if he stayed with Zelda and their boy, he would somehow hurt them, convinced that these unnatural lights were meant to target him. Up until this point, the small family had been holdings hands the whole time, but now Link had let go. When he did, he slid away as if a strong current in an invisible river had taken him.

I’m sure their boy must’ve gotten his wisdom from his mother because he was the first one to realize that this place was where they would turn into stars and take their place in the sky. But now, with Link no longer holding their hands, it was no longer a destiny meant for him.

Naturally, Zelda and the boy ran after Link to take his hand and bring him back, so they got in the river too. There was nothing they could do but let the stream bring them closer to him, and as the water brought them further away from where they had been, the sky slowly got lighter and the river they had stepped into was now visible.

Now, this is where things started to get a bit weird, as dreams often tend to become. Since Link wasn’t holding their hands, he had lost his safety and was looking more and more low-poly the longer he was separated from his family. It was as if he was losing shape and turned more into the Link we know from the original Ocarina of Time.

Luckily for Link, Zelda and the boy managed to catch up to him and hold his hand once more. I don’t remember if he eventually morphed back to his looks in Skyward Sword or if he stayed low-poly for the rest of the dream, but I knew he was safe now and back with his family. However, they had gotten too far away from the sky and were now sitting next to the river, once again with a blue sky above them and green grass under their feet.

Somehow, I had the feeling that this was meant to be the true ending of the game, with Zelda truly being Hylia and taking her place in the skies and her Hero and boy being close to her as stars in the night sky. I don’t know what happened after they were reunited since that’s when I woke up, but they knew, and I knew, that they had lost their one given opportunity to find a home in the heavens. But I also got the feeling that it didn’t matter since they finally had each other and would never let go again.

Do you think there was a hidden message in my dream? I don’t. I’m sure reading all the news and comments written by excited fans is what made my subconsciousness build up this dream for me. Either way, I’m glad I dreamt it because everything looked so pretty in my mind.
