The Willoughby-Eastlake School Board announced it is seeking applicants to fill the unexpired term of board member Michael Merhar, who resigned on Sept. 13.

The board will begin interviewing candidates on Sept. 27 and must name a replacement within 30 days of the resignation, according to a news release. The newly appointed member will serve until Dec. 31, 2023, and if they desire to continue serving, they must run in the next general election.

“I would like to express my sincere appreciation to Mr. Merhar for his commitment to the district,” School Board President Dr. Thomas Beal stated in the release. “Mr. Merhar was an integral part of the Willoughby-Eastlake Board of Education during what I believe will be viewed as one of the most challenging times in public education.

“Serving our families during a pandemic has not been an easy task and Mr. Merhar has assisted in making some very difficult decisions.”

Those interested in serving on the school board should contact Nicholas Ciarniello at nick.ciarniello@weschools.org for an application. All applications must be completed and submitted by 4 p.m. Sept. 24.

The application will also be available on the district website’s homepage at weschools.org.

According to Ohio law, people serving on Ohio school boards must be at least 18 years old, district residents and registered voters. Willoughby-Eastlake Schools serve students living in Eastlake, Timberlake, Lakeline, Willoughby, Willoughby Hills, Willowick and Waite Hill.
