USC and Long Beach State Next for Toreros

San Diego completes nonconference schedule with road trip

SAN DIEGO—No. 21 San Diego is set for a road trip to Los Angeles to face USC on Friday before heading west to visit Long Beach State on Saturday.
 
After victories against UCLA and San Diego State last week, the Toreros (5-2) are back on the road against the Trojans (4-4) on Sept. 17. USD will then make the trip across the city to face the Beach (4-5) on Sept. 18. Friday's match is scheduled for 6 p.m. (PT) and Saturday's is scheduled for 4 p.m. (PT).
 
 
ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST USC
• Thursday is the 16th all-time meeting between the Toreros and the Trojans. USD trails the all-time series 3-12. The Toreros have won the two previous meetings, the most recent coming in five sets in the JCP.

• Friday will mark the first matchup since 2010 where the Trojans are unranked. 
 
ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST LONG BEACH STATE
•  Saturday will mark the 27th all-time meeting between San Diego and Long Beach State. The Toreros trails the all-time series 11-15.
 
•  The two teams last met during the 2019 season with USD coming out on top, 3-0, on Sept. 21, 2019. 
 
LAST TIME OUT
• San Diego went 2-0 last week against UCLA and San Diego State. The Toreros won a five set thriller against No. 16 UCLA, their first ranked win of the season. USD then traveled across town to San Diego State and won 3-1 to maintain hold of the city champs title.
 
• Kylie Pries took home West Coast Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors after a 31 kill week. The sophomore outside hitter added 11 digs against SDSU to record her first career double-double and chipped in six aces in nine sets. When all was said and done, she contributed 38.5 points for the Toreros on the week.
 
• Leyla Blackwell took home West Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors to complete the sweep of weekly awards for the Toreros. Against UCLA, the sophomore middle blocker produced two solo blocks to go with five assist blocks. She also hit .234 with seven kills against the Bruins She added two more solos and seven assist blocks against the Aztecs. Blackwell chipped in six kills and hit .222 against the Aztecs.
 
• Gabby Goddard produced a major lift against the Bruins. The senior middle blocker recorded five solo blocks for a defense that averaged five blocks per set in the first match. She chipped in three block assists and four kills for good measure. Against the Aztecs, she helped the Toreros average 6.5 blocks per set with four block assists.
 
IN THE RANKINGS
• San Diego moved up four spots to No. 21 in the AVCA Weekly Coaches' Poll for week three (Sep. 12) after appearing at No. 25 last week.
 
• The Toreros have appeared in the national top-25 poll for 24 consecutive seasons, with 22 top-10 appearances. USD's highest ranking was No. 2 overall (Sept. 16, 2013).
 
• USD's highest-ranked victory came on Sept. 13, 2013 against No. 1 USC (3-1) in the Jenny Craig Pavilion. It marks the only time the Toreros have defeated a top-ranked team.
 
LOOKING AHEAD
• The Toreros open up conference play with a homestand against St. Mary's on Thursday, September 23 and Pacific on September 25. Tickets are available for both of these matches as well as the remainder of 2021's home slate at the box office or on USDToreros.com.
