Dalton looking for suspects who vandalized flags on 9/11

The flags were part of patriotic display at the Whitfield County Courthouse

DALTON, Georgia (WDEF) – The Dalton Police Department is offering a $1,000 reward for the arrest of vandalism suspects who hit a September 11th flag display.

They say both American flags and POW flags were stolen and damaged.

They were part of the American Legion’s “Avenue of Flags” at the Whitfield County Courthouse that are put up every Patriots Day and Independence Day.

But on Saturday morning, many of the flags were thrown into trees and bushes.  Some were damaged and some were stolen.

Investigators pulled surveillance video from the courthouse and the parking deck next door.

They say several vehicles arrived around 10:30 Friday night and drove to the top of the garage.

The video shows several people hanging out and playing ball for more than an hour.

Most of them left before midnight.

But three vehicles were still there around 2 AM, skateboarding.

Three more people arrived on foot.

Then they went down the stairs and began throwing flags into trees.

Police say it doesn’t look like all of them too part.

But one person in a light colored hoodie was recorded skateboarding back on the parking deck with a flag over his shoulder.

Police are releasing images of the three cars plus the skateboarder in hopes someone can identify them.

They would like to talk to anyone who was there, whether they took part or not.

If you can help, please contact Detective Clinton Travis at 706-278-9085, extension 9-231.

The $1,000 reward is for information leading to the arrest of the suspect or suspects responsible.
