Fort Valley, Ga.— Macon Judicial Circuit District Attorney Anita Howard has issued a conviction for the man who attempted to rob and pistol-whipped another man two years ago.
The District Attorney's Office announced the charges for 20-year-old Cameron Smith, which includes aggravated battery, aggravated assault, attempted armed robbery, and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
Fort Valley Department of Safety officers responded to the call on May 3, 2019, at the Lakeview Apartments for possible shots fired. When they arrived, they found a victim bleeding profusely.
After further investigation, it was revealed Smith had attempted to rob the victim at gunpoint and pistol-whipped him leading to permanent sight loss in his right eye.
According to the District Attorney's Office, while at the sentencing hearing, the prosecution team recommended a prison sentence that would send a message to the community that this type of behavior is not acceptable, is not tolerated, and should be punished appropriately because a free society cannot tolerate violent crime.
Jurors returned guilty verdicts against Smith on August 31, 2021. On Wednesday, he was given a 40-year sentence, with the first 20 years to be served in prison.
