Gran Turismo 7 creator Kazunori Yamauchi has confirmed that the upcoming racer’s campaign mode will require an online internet connection.

Speaking in an extensive interview with Eurogamer, Yamauchi-san explained the reasons for the requirement saying “it’s just to prevent cheating overall from people trying to modify the save data, so that’s the reason for the online connection.” In fact, it seems you’ll need an active internet connection for most parts of the game. “The only part of the game that doesn’t require an online connection is the arcade mode, because that has no effect on the save data, so that’s possible. But anything that has to do with the save data requires a connection.”

It’s worth noting that the previous entry in the series—Gran Turismo Sport—also had an always online requirement, but that entry was mostly focused on Online racing. Yamauchi also revealed that work on this entry started right after that game, around the end of 2017. It was also confirmed during the interview that cross-play will be supported. So both PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 owners in the multiplayer modes will be able to race together.

We got a better look at Gran Turismo 7 during last week’s PlayStation Showcase which first revealed the return of Campaign Mode. Players will start on the GT World Map as they take “unique journeys and gaining “life learning experiences” as they go.

Gran Turismo 7 is currently set to launch on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 on March 4, 2022.
