In an interview with Screen Rant’s Ash Crossan, actor Sung Kang revealed that his character in the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series has a lightsaber.

While fans knew Ewan McGregor was reprising his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi, Hayden Christensen was returning to play Darth Vader, and Joel Edgerton and Bonnie Piesse would play Owen and Beru Lars again, fans were unsure of who Sung Kang or any of the other cast members would be playing.

Now that it’s known the Fast and Furious franchise star will be playing a character with a lightsaber, fans have a better sense of who he might be. These are the most likely theories that align with Kang’s comments.

An Inquisitor

The most likely answer is that Kang is playing an Inquisitor. The Inquisitorious have played significant roles in Star Wars Rebels, Jedi: Fallen Order, the Darth Vader comics, and the Ahsoka novel.

Set 10 years after Revenge of the Sith and nine years before A New Hope, Kenobi seems like the perfect story for the Inquisitors to make their live-action debut. The Inquisitorious are still active and hunting down Jedi at this point in this timeline.

It seems unlikely that Obi-Wan will stay on Tatooine for all of Kenobi, yet something drastic would have to happen to convince Obi-Wan to step away from watching over young Luke Skywalker. An Inquisitor getting too close for comfort — acting as a threat to both Obi-Wan and young Luke –could be the impetus needed for Obi-Wan to leave Tatooine and deal with the threat.

It’s already been confirmed that Darth Vader will be in this series, so the Inquisitors could also be seen working directly with Vader to find Obi-Wan, other Jedi, or Force-sensitive children.

Cinelinx previously reported that Kang would be playing the Fifth Brother–an Inquisitor first seen in Star Wars Rebels — and Kang’s comments about having a lightsaber might confirm this report.

Of course, an Inquisitor isn’t the only character he could be playing.

A Jedi

While most of the Jedi have been wiped out at this point in this timeline, Obi-Wan is not the only remaining survivor of Order 66. Kang could also be playing a Jedi survivor who crosses paths with Obi-Wan.

He could be an ally, but could also provide an intriguing moral dilemma as Obi-Wan would want to help his fellow Jedi, and yet this character could risk bringing unwanted attention to Obi-Wan and his mission of hiding and protecting young Luke.

This Jedi could be a character that fans have met before, but it is more likely to be a brand new character. Fans know how the stories of Obi-Wan, Darth Vader, Uncle Owen, and Aunt Beru will continue beyond Kenobi, but a new Jedi character could raise the stakes as the audience doesn’t know his ultimate fate.
