The Milwaukee Bucks are you defending NBA Champion and on Wednesday night they made an historic announcement as they announced that Lisa Byington will be there full time play by play announcer for this upcoming season on Bally Sports Wisconsin. The hiring makes Byington the first female play by play announcer for a major American Men’s sports team.
This is a historic landmark long overdue not only for Byington herself, but for females in sports media. Byington is a former basketball and soccer player at Northwestern and was the female play-by-play announcer for a Big Ten Network football broadcast in 2017. Byington also became the first female to do play by play for the NCAA’s Men’s basketball tourney on CBS and Turner Sports this past March.
Byington said in a statement “I’m absolutely thrilled for this opportunity, and the ability to work with a first-class franchise and a championship organization like the Milwaukee Bucks. She went on to say “I understand the groundbreaking nature of this hire, and I appreciate the fact that during this process that aspect was addressed, but never made a primary focus.”
