A Tequesta firefighter-paramedic is fighting cancer and needs help from the public.
James Stack, 31, of Port St. Lucie, learned in July that he has Stage 4 non-Hodgkins T-cell lymphoma. He is currently on unpaid leave, unable to work and is receiving chemotherapy.
Stack says doctors have told him he needs a stem cell donor so that he can receive a stem cell bone marrow transplant.
A drive-through event will be held Sunday at the Jupiter Lighthouse and Museum parking lot from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. where people age 18-55 can have their mouth swabbed to see if they are a suitable donor.
"Cancer picked the wrong body when it came to me and I'm gonna beat it. There's no doubt in my mind, I'm gonna beat this cancer," Stack said.
A gofundme page has also been set up to assist Stack because he can no longer work. So far, about $30,000 has been raised.
Some of his colleagues are also working for free the shifts he was normally scheduled to work so that he can continue to receive a paycheck. Others are donating their unused sick and vacation time to Stack.
Stack is single and has been a Tequesta firefighter-paramedic for 3 years.
