A jail guard at the Oklahoma City Detention Center has been arrested for neglecting to perform her nightly duties, which resulted in several inmates being sexually and/or physically assaulted.
The Oklahoma County Criminal Justice Authority reports that Detention Officer LeeMontye Hennesy was working on the 6th floor of the detention center on the night of June 3. Her duties included conducting sight checks in all cells on her assigned floor, as well as checking the safety of all the inmates by checking each individual cell.
According to the OCDC, Hennesy was supposed to do these routine checks at a maximum of every 60 minutes. She was required to do a minimum of 12 sight checks for her 12 hour shift.
Around 2 p.m., OCDC says the supervisor on duty reported seeing a group of inmates gathering near a cell. The supervisor had to tell Hennesy multiple times to go check on the cell to see what was happening.
At 2:17 p.m., Hennesy logged that she was conducting a sight check. Video shows Hennesy walking to the cell, but immediately turning around to come back. Along the way back, several inmates stopped her. The inmates appeared to have been crying as they reported an incident that had occurred.
At 2:26 p.m., Hennesy writes in the logbook that the sight check had been completed and "all appears to be okay," despite inmates reports.
Hennesy allegedly failed to check on the wellbeing of all the inmates. OCDC said that had she followed up on inmates reports, she would have discovered what happened at the cell and it would have prevented other inmates from being physically assaulted.
OCDC reports that Hennesy failed to conduct her twelve hourly sight checks during her shift according to log records, which then resulted in inmates being assaulted on her watch.
