It’s time to join the Resistance! Walt Disney World Resort’s beloved theme park, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, is home to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge and the Guest-favorite attraction, Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance. Now, Disney has officially confirmed that the way Guests experience this ride will be changing very soon!

Starting September 23, Walt Disney World will be pausing the use of the virtual queue system for Rise of the Resistance, allowing Guests to wait in a standby queue for the attraction. The implementation of a standby queue for this ride comes just before the start of the Walt Disney World Resort 50th anniversary celebrations. The World’s Most Magical Celebration begins on October 1, bringing even more Guests to the Disney theme parks in Florida.

Per Disney Parks Blog:

As we ramp up to “The World’s Most Magical Celebration” honoring our 50th anniversary, we’re continuing to enhance experiences thanks to the feedback from our guests.

We know our guests love choice and flexibility when planning their time in a theme park—which is why, starting Sept. 23, we will pause the use of virtual queue for Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, and guests at Disney’s Hollywood Studios may experience this incredible attraction using a traditional standby queue for the first time since it opened in 2019.

Virtual queues continue to be helpful with attraction access, merchandise launches, grand openings and more, and guests should continue to check the My Disney Experience app for the latest on how we’re using virtual queues across Walt Disney World Resort including its potential use at Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance at a later date, or from time to time.

A standby queue for Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance is something that many Guests have been waiting for. Since 2019, the only way to be able to ride Rise of the Resistance was by obtaining a boarding group and joining the virtual queue through the My Disney Experience app, the official app of Walt Disney World. If a Guest did not get a boarding group, they would not be able to ride the attraction.

Therefore, a standby queue for Rise of the Resistance standby queue will give Guests the opportunity to wait to ride the attraction in a regular standby line, just as they would for any other popular attraction, like Flight of Passage at Pandora – The World of Avatar in Disney’s Animal Kingdom or Seven Dwarfs Mine Train in Fantasyland in Magic Kingdom, for example.

Note that while the standby queue will be utilized and the virtual queue will be paused for Rise of the Resistance as of September 23, Disney does mention that it is possible for the virtual queue to be used once again in the future for Rise of the Resistance at Walt Disney World Resort. We’ll continue to update our website as more information is released.

Also note that the new amenity called Disney Genie will be launching this fall, and with it Disney Genie+, the all-new replacement for the FastPass+ system. Disney has already confirmed that Guests will be allowed to purchase Lightning Lane (the new name for the FastPass queue) access for Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance and other popular attractions at an additional charge in the future. This means that even though there is a standby queue coming for Rise of the Resistance, you could pay an additional fee to allow yourself an even shorter wait for the ride through Lighting Lane. A launch date for Disney Genie+ has not yet been announced.

As a reminder, this Disney Park update is currently for Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida. When we have an update for the attraction at Disneyland Park in California, we will share it.
