Santa Cruz’s Autumn Hays and Keanna Miller are set to compete in the World Surf League’s Nissan Super Girl Surf Pro, a Women’s QS 3,000 event in Oceanside. The competition window opens Friday and runs through Sunday.

Hays competes in Heat 3 in the Round of 64 against San Clemente’s Samantha Sibley and two other surfers to be determined. Hays placed fifth in her past two QS events, earning 500 points for her finishes at the Jack’s Surfboards Pro in Huntington Beach on Aug. 5-8 and WRV Outer Banks Pro in Nags Head, North Carolina, on Sept. 1-5.

Miller competes in Heat 9 in the Round of 64 against Brazil’s Tatiana Weston-Webb, La Jolla’s Molly Tuschen and a surfer to be determined. Miller has placed 17th in her past two QS events, earning 200 points for her finishes at the Jack’s Surfboards Pro and WRV Outer Banks Pro. She was recently crowned as the National Scholastic Surfing Association’s West Coast Regional Explorer champion.

Weston-Webb finished second at the Rip Curl WSL Finals at Lower Trestles in San Clemente over the weekend.

Miller follows a star-studded Heat 8, which includes Carissa Moore, the 2020 Olympic champion and six-time WSL Women’s World Tour champion, Corona del Mar’s Malia Ward, a contestant on ABC’S The Ultimate Surfer, and a surfer to be determined. Moore won World Tour titles in 2011, ’13, ’15, ’19, ’20 and ’21.

Action opens with the Round of 88, which includes a dozen four-surfer heats.

Boys cross country

St. Francis’ Vargas takes second: St. Francis senior Julian Vargas (15:06) finished second to York senior Michael Julian (14:48) at the Pacific Coast Athletic League Cypress Division’s race No. 1 at 2.93-mile Pinto Lake Park on Wednesday.

Pacific Collegiate sophomore Spencer Koontz (16:29) took third. Marina senior Steven Aspeitia (16:36) and Watsonville senior Sebastian Abonce (17:12) rounded out the top five. St, Francis junior Santiago Ramirez (17:32) took sixth.

Watsonville won the race with a score of 60. Soledad (81) took second and was followed by Rancho San Juan (85), Monterey (91), St Francis (133), PCS (137), York (137) and Marina (185).

Senior Emanuel Renteria-Garcia (ninth; 17:48), freshman Rodrigo Barranco (13th; 18:12), senior Daniel Mata (14th; 18:14) and sophomore Eli Romero (19th; 18:47) also scored for the Wildcatz.

Kirby’s Anderson takes fourth: Kirby freshman Roark Anderson (18:13) took fifth to lead the Griffins to fourth place at race No. 1 in race No. 1 of the PCAL Santa Lucia Division at 2.93-mile Pinto Lake Park on Wednesday..

Kirby finished with a score of 79, behind Gonzales (44), Christopher (64) and Oakwood (77) and ahead of Trinity Christian (93).

Kirby senior Tommy Shaughnessy (19:05) took eighth.

Girls cross country

Watsonville’s Ruiz takes second: Watsonville freshman Katelynn Ruiz (20:03) finished second to Christopher junior Sarah Arcelo (19:43) at the PCAL’s Cypress Division race No. 1 at 2.93-mile Pinto Lake Park on Wednesday.

Junior Edith Rodriguez (22:37) took eighth and junior Alexa Pedraza (23:11) was 13th as the Wildcatz took fifth place.

Monterey (55) won the race. Second through sixth place was decided by five points. Christopher (84) took second and was followed by Rancho San Juan (85), Soledad (87), Watsonville (88) and Santa Catalina (89).

St. Francis’ Ramirez wins race: St. Francis sophomore Monserrat Ramirez (19:40) won race No. 1 of the PCAL Santa Lucia Division at 2.93-mile Pinto Lake Park on Wednesday.

PCS was the only school with a complete team. It had five runners in the 21-athlete field finish in the top 10: sophomore Rosa Paten (second; 20:41), freshman Arie Shae McNeil (third; 22:28), juniors Sophie Mateja (sixth; 23:28) and Analia Avila (seventh; 23:28) and sophomore Ariel Ferrell (10th; 24:51).

Sharks’ junior Claire Burke (23:54) took eighth and classmate Arianna Fernandez (26:42) took 11th.

Junior Zoey Upshur (17th; 32:59) led Kirby and Aislinn Magana (33:21) led Ceiba.

Pro baseball

Gilbert placed on IL: The Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday placed rookie left-handed pitcher Tyler Gilbert on the 10-day injured list with left elbow fatigue. The move is retroactive to Monday.

Gilbert, a Felton native, and the Diamondbacks close the regular season with a three-game series at San Francisco that begins Sept. 28.

He is 2-2 with a 3.15 ERA in nine appearances, including six starts, spanning 40 innings.

Women’s volleyball

At Cabrillo 3, Marin 0: The Seahawks earned a 25-15, 25-21, 25-21 sweep on Wednesday.

The Seahawks (2-3) play a doubleheader on Saturday at the Sequoias Classic in Visalia, taking on West Hills Coalinga (3-4) at 11 a.m. and Sequoias (7-4) at 1 p.m.

Girls volleyball

Soquel 3, at San Lorenzo Valley 0: Makiah Dexel had 10 aces and the Knights earned a 25-7, 25-12, 25-21 sweep in their Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League match Tuesday.

Caira Cantlen had 10 kills for the Knights (3-3, 2-1) and Jessie Dueck added eight kills.

The Knights host Harbor on Thursday at 7 p.m.

At Pacific Collegiate 3, Stevenson 2: The Pumas earned a 25-21, 8-25, 25-20, 29-25, 15-12 win Tuesday night.

Girls tennis

At St. Francis 4, Gilroy 3: The Sharks swept doubles action and won their home match Tuesday.

Alexa Garcia and Claire Croghan at No. 1 doubles, Emmy Ritter and Ava Meschi won at No. 2 and Juliana Duarte and Isabel Meschi won at No. 3.

St. Francis’ Makena Bedolla won at No. 2 singles.

Women’s golf

UC Santa Cruz at CA State Intercollegiate: Gillian Mendoza led UCSC to sixth place at the 11-team CA State Intercollegiate on Tuesday.

The Banana Slugs closed with a 295 — their lowest round in program history — for a 603 total at Olivas Links in Ventura.

Mendoza closed with an even-par 72 for a 3-over 147 total and ninth place. She finished 10 strokes behind the medalist Hannah Jugar, an All-American for Redlands.

UCSC senior Mara Anunciacion (151) took 21st. Charlotte Ruhl and Alyssa Yee tied for 26th with 153 totals, and Riley Birch (159) took 39th.

Men’s soccer

Cabrillo 4, at Hancock 2: Tanner Ruddy had a goal and assist in the Seahawks’ win Tuesday in Santa Maria.

Oscar Esqueda’s unassisted goal in the 72nd minute held up as the winner.

Cabrillo’s Jael Leal scored on a pass from Ruddy to tie the score 1-all in the 30th minute and Hugo Vargas scored on a pass from Maxence Huin in the 70th minute to knot the score at 2-all.

Goalies Sean Cameron and Daniel Medina-Diaz each played a half and made a combined eight saves for the Seahawks (2-1-1).

Cabrillo hosts Sequoias (1-2-2) on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

Menlo 1, at UCSC 0: Junior forward Caden Mink scored in the 56th minute to sink the host Banana Slugs at Lower East Field on Wednesday.

UCSC outshot the Oaks 11-8 and generated six corner kicks to the Oaks’ one.

Slugs goalie Wolf Schermerhorn made his second straight start and recorded a pair of saves over 90 minutes.

Menlo improved to 2-2-0.

The Banana Slugs (1-4-1) play at Cal Lutheran (4-1-0) in Thousand Oaks on Saturday at 7 p.m.

Women’s soccer

At Pomona-Pitzer 6, UCSC 0: Isla Burch scored twice as the No. 12 ranked Sagehens blanked the Banana Slugs in Claremont on Tuesday.

The Slugs (1-3-1) were outshot 18-3 and didn’t have a corner kick, while the Sagehens (5-0-0) had seven.

Alyssa Diaz-Tucker played 64:35 minutes and made five saves for UCSC and teammate Samantha Coelho played 25:25 and made three saves.

UCSC plays at Menlo (3-0-1) in Atherton on Saturday at 4 p.m.
