Chris Eubank Jr targets Caleb Plant challenge if American shocks Canelo Alvarez
Chris Eubank Jr has admitted he would challenge Caleb Plant if he can pull off a shock victory over Canelo Alvarez.
Plant takes on Alvarez in an undisputed super middleweight clash with his Mexican opponent considered the best fighter pound-for-pound in the sport.
And Eubank Jr is looking to get back into the world title fold, currently holding mandatory status to challenge for the WBA middleweight belt but could move up in weight.
But the British fighter has now admitted that he would "absolutely" fight Plant if he was to progress beyond Alvarez, stating that would make him "pound-for-pound".
"Absolutely I would fight Plant, if he was to win that makes him the pound-for-pound," Eubank told Mirror Fighting .
"Everyone has a chance, but I just don't see Plant beating him, he is not a bad fighter, but he's not going to fight Canelo he is going to run and he will try to survive and nick it.
"We have seen time and time again over the years of fighters trying to do that and it never works, and Canelo has that style of fight figured out and he will get you eventually.
Eubank Jr has also spoken frequently on his plan to make the switch up and challenge Alvarez, especially after domestic rival Saunders was unable to dethrone the unified champion.
And the 31-year-old believes he has the power and skillset to directly challenge the Mexican to a firefight.
"You have to march forward and fight fire with fire, you have to try and push him back and out punch him because let's face it who has done that," Eubank Jr continued.
"He has never had to deal with that, so I don't see him having the game-plan for that, and that is the only way I know how to fight.
"So this is where I get my confidence from and I believe I can beat Canelo."
There are several options available for the Briton next, but first he will make his ring return against Sven Elbir as part of Wasserman Boxing's new partnership with Sky Sports in October.
But despite the focus being on his latest test, Eubank Jr has made a list of five opponents he would like to fight including Liam Williams and Gennady Golovkin.
”We are looking for them big fights that the public want to see, obviously Golovkin has been on my radar for years now and we are just waiting to see if he is fighting or not," he said at the Wasserman media day. “I don’t see how that fight can’t happen over the next 12 months, there is no way that fight can’t happen.
“I have now been made mandatory for that WBA super title, so hopefully I can potentially receive an offer to get a shot at that.
“You have Liam Williams domestically who has always called my name, Canelo Alvarez at 168 pounds that I would certainly move up to take that fight.
“I see all these names but I’m not sure they will take these fights, and of course Saunders that rat calling my name with no belt and no credibility.”
Chris Eubank Jr continues his road to major World title contention against German standout Sven Elbir on October 2 at The SSE Arena, Wembley, live and exclusive on Sky Sports. Tickets available via www.AXS.com.
