The boys’ doubles team of Dan Abad and Anthony Olazabal provided Kodiak tennis with two victories on a recent trip to the Mainland that featured dates with Colony, Palmer and Wasilla.
Abad and Olazabal defeated Wasilla’s Hudson Mobley and Owen Hoyt and Palmer’s Noah Wilkins and Derek Hallman. Those were the only victories in season-counting matches on the two-day trip to the Mat-Su Valley that concluded Saturday.
“Overall, we did not do well, though we are a very new and green team,” Kodiak coach Steve Johnston wrote in an email.
One of the weekend’s best matches was an open boys’ singles match between Abad and Colony’s Tyler Easley. Despite Easly winning 6-0, 6-1, Johnston said the match featured a slew of rallies.
“When he (Abad) could press Tyler with power and well-placed balls, he would win the rally four out of six times. However, Tyler was able to dominate in this same way most of the time, and he was able to win those eight out of 10 times,” Johnston wrote in an email. “Good match, though. Dan felt much better about playing singles after this.”
Ed Hernaez and Lavender Putnam picked up Kodiak’s only other victory. They defeated Palmer’s Jesse Hushtowner and Lily Anderson in an open match.
Kodiak now prepares for the Region III Championships Sept. 27-29 in Anchorage.
