This is the game that will determine whether Green Run is for real.
The third-ranked Stallions (2-0) beat up Tallwood 56-7 in their first game, but faced a tough challenge from Kempsville last week before winning 21-13.
Now, Green Run travels to No. 12 Salem, a perennial power and the defending Beach District champion. There was no district title awarded in the spring.
“We are looking forward to this week’s matchup versus Salem,” Green Run coach Brandon Williams said. “We knew going into this season this will be a marquee game, so we are looking forward to the challenge.”
Green Run hasn’t beaten Salem since 2010, losing 13 straight.
But this team is strong, led by quarterback Xavier Davis, who has completed 37 of 52 passes for 544 yards, seven touchdowns and no interceptions. His top targets are Tayon Holloway (14 receptions, 198 yards, three TDs), Keylen Adams (13 receptions, 176 yards, three TDs) and Dyshaun Newby (six receptions, 111 yards, one TD).
The running game is led by Sammy Wiggins, who has gained 186 yards.
On defense, linebackers Zakai Hall (16 tackles) and Tyler Baker (13 tackles) lead the way. Wayne Washington (three interceptions) and Christian Parham (13 tackles) patrol the secondary.
The SunDevils (2-0) hope to keep their streak going, led by quarterback Angelo Liotta, who has completed 18 of 33 passes for 272 yards and two touchdowns. His leading receivers are Jahrell Walton (four receptions for 99 yards, one TD), Evan Millar (four receptions, 74 yards) and Emmanuel Taylor (four receptions, 50 yards). Keimar Carter-Gatlin leads the rushing attack with 98 yards.
