Millwood Public Schools announced that Friday's football game between Millwood Falcons and Clinton Red Tornadoes has been canceled.
The Superintendent of Millwood, Cecilia Robinson-Woods, said the cancellation of the game is due to the school's poor academic standing.
"Millwood football has always stood behind the importance of developing the total student-athlete and living out our motto of 'Building champions in the classroom, in the community and in life,'" Robinson-Woods said. "We have never been faced with these circumstances, but this percentage of ineligible players is not acceptable."
Robinson-Woods said the district will not be "bubble-wrapping" their student-athletes. She said they need to understand that there are consequences to the decisions they make, and they need to be held accountable for that, not shielded from it.
"The decision to cancel this contest, while extremely difficult to do, is required to make sure that we are able to achieve short-term and life-long goals that we say are important," Robinson-Woods said. "Academics is always our first priority."
