ROCKVILLE, Md. (AP) — A Maryland man is facing charges after his father’s decomposing body was found in the home they shared, authorities announced Wednesday.
Gary D. Howes, 51, of Rockville was arrested last week and charged with neglect of a vulnerable adult that resulted in death and/or serious physical injury, the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office said in a news release.
On Sept. 6, county police officers received a request to visit the home of Gary W. Howes, who was said to be in extremely poor health, police said in a court document. The caller said relatives had been refused access to the home, according to the document.
When police went to the house, Gary D. Howes refused to let them in, the document said. When asked about his father, Howes said his father was visiting a friend in West Virginia. Police later learned that the friend died in 2016.
Officers returned on Sept. 9 with search and seizure warrants and detected the smell of a decomposing human body before they found remains in a bedroom under a file cabinet, police said. The remains were confirmed to be those of Gary W. Howes.
Gary D, Howes is jailed on a $10,000 bond. It’s not known if he has an attorney.
