A Graveside service for Dorothy Mae Dickens Frazier, 80 of Brownwood, will be held Sunday, September 19, 2021 at 4:00 pm at Greenleaf Cemetery.

Visitation will be held Saturday September 18, from 4:00 to 8:00 pm at Brownwood Funeral Home.

Momma…That word and all of the beautiful images it creates in the minds of those fortunate enough to have a warm loving mother…sums her up.

Dorothy Mae was born November 4, 1940 in Bay City, TX to John E. Dickens and Magdalena Josephine Dickens Krohn.  She went on to become Dorothy Mae Dickens Gilliam, and mother to three children, Sheri, Cindy, and Don Jr.  Later in life she became Dorothy Mae Dickens Frazier and stepmother to Dana, and Diana.

On September 12,1921, she passed from this world to her eternal home. It seems only fitting that this day also happened to be Grandparent’s Day.  I think Momma had the last laugh in keeping with her sense of humor.  She will surely be missed but we were blessed to have her in our lives.

Her last months were spent at home in Lake Brownwood, TX with her husband, Dan Frazier, who kept and cared for her as she fought against Dementia and a host of other health problems.  She passed quietly in her sleep with family nearby.

She was trapped in a cage that tried to contain her spirit, but now she is free once again and can be who she always wanted to be, a woman who loves her family, people, and nature.  It’s amazing how much living goes into that little hash mark, Dorothy, “our little Mama” was a fighter.  She graduated from Baylor University in 1974 with a degree in Social Work, fulfilling a dream she’d had for a very long time.  We know it was tough going to school and raising three young children who teased her mercilessly about being a “career student”. It took her several years, but she was stubborn and didn’t know how to quit once she fixed her mind on the goal and she achieved it.

She spent several years as a Social Worker and her clients knew that they had a person in their lives who truly cared about them and their welfare. She made many good friends along the way, and they also knew there was a warm caring person in their corner.

Dorothy loved people, and she was all about family.  She was our mother, our confidant, our strongest cheerleader, and our best friend as the years passed. We never questioned her love; we knew we were loved.

Her warmth, sense of humor, and laughter will always be remembered, as will her love of nature.    She loved the lakes, the mountains, the forests, and the oceans. She shared this love with her family.  We spent many happy moments swimming at Lake Waco, camping out in various locations, and travelling across country during summer vacation. The wilder and more unchartered the land, the more she seemed to love it.

Dorothy was preceded in death by both parents; John E. Dickens and Magdalena Josephine Dickens Krohn, her former spouse; Don Gilliam Sr.; and brother-in-law; Terry Wheeler.

Dorothy is survived by her husband, Dan Frazier; 2 daughters: Cindy Gilliam Haigood (David), and Sheri Gilliam Oswood (Jeff); 1 son: Don Gilliam Jr.; 2 step daughters: Dana Samuelson, and Diana Frazier; 2 sisters: Jo Holland (Bob), and Nelda Wheeler; 1 brother: Harvey Krohn (Becky); 5 grandkids: Danette, Rebecca, April, Zach, and Sarah; 3 great grandkids: Kaylee, Jarod, and Alina, as well as multiple nieces, nephews, and cousins.
