Terry Farrell played the role of Jadzia Dax for six seasons

When you look back at Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Terry Farrell plays the role of Jadzia Dax so perfectly that it seemed like she was made for it. One can’t imagine another actress taking on the part with the ease in which she did. But, according to Rick Berman, who was quoted in The Fifty-Year Mission: The Next 25 years, the role was difficult to cast, although many actresses would probably disagree with his reasoning.

In his quote, Berman said that it was hard to find a woman who was beautiful and a good actress. He then added that “women are either good actresses or they’re beautiful.” And most of the beautiful actresses that were good went straight to the movies instead of a a syndicated television series. The studio read a lot of actresses for the role before finding Farrell who Berman said was certainly the best.

Michael Piller had a different reason for the difficulty in casting Jadzia Dax

Casting Jadzia was a challenge because her character was hard to define, according to Piller. He went on to say that he could write a book about Trills, but, at the time, it was difficult to make the role different for Farrell to make her stand out as something alien and yet accessible. Farrell herself has said that she didn’t think the studio liked her very much as an actress, but since there was room to grow, she was hired.

Farrell did face some challenges when she took on the role, but she overcame them and made the character her own. In fact, she grew so well into the role that her character’s death in season six devastated fans. Some of them still aren’t over it. While it wasn’t easy to find the right actress to play the Trill, the studio did right by hiring Terry Farrell.
