Grand Seiko Asakage and Yukage Salute the Light and Shade of Japanese Architecture
The watches are European exclusives.
Grand Seiko might be better known for Japan Domestic Market (JDM) exclusives, but the brand’s European buyers now have a pair of time-only handwound watches to brag about.
The pair of 37mm stainless steel watches – dubbed Asakage and Yukage – take their inspiration from the interplay of light and shadow found in Japanese architect and the wooden lattice shōji screen cover in washi paper used to diffuse light for artistic effect.
Sitting within Grand Seiko’s Elegance Collection, the two watches are available exclusively through the brand’s European retailers.
SBGW267 depicts Asakage, the “dazzling morning sunlight”, that once absorbed by the shōji, illuminates entire rooms, while SBGW269, takes on the role of Yukage, the “faint orange light of dusk” that fills rooms with warmth.
While adopting different shades, both pieces feature a curved dial with ‘washi paper’ texture, enclosed by a glassbox sapphire crystal and use Grand Seiko’s Calibre 9S64 manually wound movement that offers a 72-hour power reserve.
Both watches will be available in October via Grand Seiko Boutiques and retailers, priced £4,150 GBP (approximately $5,735 USD).
