SALT LAKE CITY — One person was killed and two were critically injured in two separate crashes late Wednesday in Salt Lake City, police said.
About 10:05 p.m., a man and woman in a Tesla crashed at 11th Avenue and B Street when the car failed to make the corner at B Street, said Salt Lake Police Lt. Dave Cracroft. The car went through the guard rail and crashed down into Memory Grove Park.
The man, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the vehicle. The woman was wearing a seat belt. Crews extracted her from the vehicle, police said.
Both were taken to a local hospital in critical condition.
Police initially believed a third person might have been in the vehicle, but crews searched the area with a helicopter and flare, and police searched on the ground, but they did not find another person, according to Cracroft.
He said he did not know how fast the vehicle was going, but described the speed as "quite fast."
When asked whether the driver might have been using the Tesla's self-driving feature before the crash, Salt Lake police detective Michael Ruff said it is too soon to know and the investigation is ongoing.

Soon after, about 10:30 p.m. near 1000 N. 900 West, a pedestrian was hit by a vehicle, Salt Lake police said in a statement. Officers arrived at and found a female in the road. Despite life-saving measures, that woman died at the scene.
The pedestrian's name and age have not yet been released.
Police said the driver of the vehicle that hit the woman in the road is cooperating with the investigation. No arrests have been made.
A crash reconstruction team responded to investigate both crashes.
