ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - About 30 miles of highway from St. Charles to south St. Louis County will be closed at 2 p.m. for the funeral procession of fallen Marine Lance Cpl. Jared M. Schmitz. The Missouri Highway Patrol wants everyone to be able to honor and pay their respects safely Thursday afternoon.

The procession will begin around 2 p.m. at Baue Funeral Home at 3950 West Clay Street in St. Charles, it will take eastbound Interstate 70, then exit on southbound Interstate 270, through onto Interstate 255 and then will take the Telegraph Road exit. It will head north and then turn right onto Sheridan Road and head towards Jefferson Barracks.

The entire route will close when it begins, then highway entrances will reopen as the complete procession has passed. MSHP Cpl. Dallas Thompson expects larger crowds than last week's honorable delivery of his body from the St. Louis airport to the funeral home.

He also expects people going in the opposite direction on the highway to stop to watch. He wants to let people know how to do that safely.

"We just want people to know that if you're going to do that, we'd prefer you to be able to view from an outer road, a parking lot, an off ramp," he says.

He also says if you should avoid the area if you're not planning on being part of the event.
