I’ve had a look and can’t find a thread on this so please delete if so.

Janine’s accent? I don’t remember her being so posh and camp. Or am I misremembering? Isn’t she east end born and bred? The accent is making everything so hammy.

I believe she lived in Manchester for a while with her sister Claire who turned out to be nigel step daughter later, this ended up confusing people, myself included.

It's one of the first things I noticed. She definitely sounds posher this time round.

Charlie Brooks hasn't played Janine for a long time so it could take a while to settle back into the role and get the accent right.

I thought it was put on, to try and make out she is a cut above the likes of Kat.

She even talks to her kid like it. And if it was a fake accent, wouldn’t Kat etc tell her to pack it in. They all know her.

She was also using it during all the dramatics of the fire with the kids so I don’t think it’s janine putting it on. Wouldn’t be the time for making sure her fake accent is on point. Just think Charlie Brooks has forgotten how Janine sounds.

ETA: sorry thought I edited this on to previous comment rather than make a whole new comment.

In all fairness, Charlie hasn’t played Janine in a long time, and has played many a character since her last stint in Albert Square, so she’s bound to somewhat forget. Also, Janine when leaving Walford last time, had a lot of money, so has probably spent her time mixing in upper class circles of society, so she’s bound to have picked up some twang. Furthermore, the accent could also be slightly put on, due to being in formal situations where she needs to appear presentable such as being a doctor, as well as, standing up in a court room. I noticed she lost the accent quite a bit during the fire, as well.

I personally don’t mind it, as I find it quite funny, Janine is attempting her best Hyacinth Bucket impression. It adds that comedic flare she’s always had as a character.

Janinrs sister Claire and Nigels stepdaughter Claire are 2 different women.

Claire Butcher is Frank and June Butchers eldest daughter who was born in the late 50s and is therefore much older than the other Butcher children.
She did indeed have long spells of looking after Janind in Manchester.

Claire Bates (née Tyler) is Nigels stepdaughter, born in the early 80s and about the same age as Janine.

I haven't noticed any difference either.

I haven't really spent much time thinking about Janines accent over the years but my feeling is that she has always, at least as played by Charlie Brooks, been a little better spoken and less obviously EastEnd than many other characters such as Sonia, Kat or Stacey.

Which kind of makes sense given the disruptive nature of her upbringing with different primary carers, different schools, different friendship groups and living almost as long in Manchester as she did London.

Add into that adult Janine wanting to be rich and move in rich circles she probably has deliberately cultivated a "better" accent and manners.

I've watched some old scenes on YouTube and I don't think she's much different at all. As she grew up she definitely put on airs and graces, dropping back into the East End accent when things would inevitably end up in a screaming row. Janine is always playing a part, it works for me.

Where do you get your ridiculous notions from, you came out with some utter tripe on the classic Corrie thread as well?

I thought it was very noticeable last week, but in the last couple of episodes she’s sounded more like she used to.

I think Charlie Brooks is from north Wales (or was brought up there).

I seem to remember that Janine had a little bit of a northern accent when Charlie took over the role, but I might be wrong there

I haven't watched EE since last March (first lockdown?) but keep half an eye on the comings and goings. I'm still waiting for Danny Butcher to turn up at some point - he'd be a Manc.

Thought exactly the same! She’s definitely posher. But she’s always been well spoken compared to all the other characters in the square. Maybe being a fake doctor has gone to her head! Lol

It was the same when Rob Kazinsky return as Sean in 2019 I guess when you don't play a character for some time and not do the accent more regular definitely has a effect lol

The confusion didn't stop either when Claire left to join Steps and then she appeared on Celebrity big Brother.

Or maybe that's another Claire 🤨

Yes you're thinking of Claire Usher, a one-hit wonder from the 80s.

In fact, one time I took her home to have tea and meet my mum and she asked my mum to cut the crusts off the cucumber sandwiches. My mum said "You've got yourself a right posh bird there, Our Mo".

Janine has always been well-spoken with a slight East End accent, even when Charlie Brooks was new in the role. I put it down at the time to an actress with RP adopting a London accent for the role. I guess that it became part of the character over time and fits in with Janine's aspirations of wealth and sophistication. Years ago I had a housemate with a very refined accent, who occasionally lapsed into her original Leicestershire dialect. My brother in Australia can also switch back and forth between London and Melbourne.
