OMAHA, Neb. (FOX42KPTM) - Surrounded by Nebraska football memorabilia, Jerry Murtaugh proudly recalled his playing days with the program Wednesday.
"We had two great quarterbacks and great receivers and we had a really tremendous football team."
Murtaugh was a linebacker for Nebraska between 1968 and 1970. During his senior year, he helped the team win a national championship by beating LSU. That title came after a victory over Oklahoma, which was a big rivalry.
"We didn't beat them by much. They were spunky and they were young."
Little did Murtaugh know an even more memorable game between the two schools would take place the following year.
"That was a great game."
FOX 42 NEWS: "So that 1970 team going into 1971 became much more experienced?"
MURTAUGH: "There you go. Experience makes a lot of difference."
For the past several years, one of Nebraska's biggest rivalries has been Iowa. It has now been 11 years since the last time the Huskers played Oklahoma. Murtuagh hopes the game between the two teams on Saturday will renew interest in the history the two schools share.
"That is tradition. It never should have gone away," said Murtaugh, who will be in attendance at the game Saturday.
Nebraska and Oklahoma are also scheduled to meet again next year. They're also scheduled to meet up in 2029 and in 2030.
You can watch Saturday's game between Nebraska and Oklahoma on FOX 42. Kickoff is scheduled for 11:00 A.M. We'll also be airing a pregame show Friday night.
These days, Murtaugh is a part of a foundation called the Nebraska Greats Foundation, which he created. The goal is to provide medical and financial aid for former Nebraska athletes.
