Indie-folk/pop style singer Gayle Skidmore will perform Sept. 26 from 1:30 to 3 p.m. at Gyppo Ale Mill, 1661 Upper Pacific Drive in Shelter Cove.

Skidmore (from The Netherlands by way of San Diego) is touring in support of her self-illustrated limited art print that is accompanied by a download of her latest self-produced single, “All My Life.”

Growing up in a musical family in San Diego, Skimore was fascinated with music from the start, recording little songs with her sisters from the age of 3. The early loss of her uncle and several childhood friends sparked an intuitive turn to songwriting as a way to process and cope with these events. She started performing these songs in San Diego venues when she was 14 and recorded her first EP at the age of 18.

Skidmore plays piano, guitar, banjo, banjolele and dulcimer. Her last full-length album was 2017’s “The Golden West.”

Now, Skidmore is at work on releasing a new piano album, “Hiraethean Echoes,” which was recorded at the Wisseloord Studios in The Netherlands. She won “De Beste Singer-Songwriter van het Groene Hart,” and was awarded free studio time in Wisseloord, where she recorded with Fieke van den Hurk.

“Hiraethean Echoes” features nostalgic piano pieces that encapsulate a longing for home, reflective of Skidmore’s time as an expat in The Netherlands.

Skidmore — who recently moved to The Netherlands — discovered the word “Hiraeth” while researching her Welsh heritage during the lockdown in 2020. She was struck by its poignant meaning: a homesickness for a home that you can’t return to or that never was.

Having written over 2,500 songs since she began songwriting at the age of 8, Skidmore has had the chance to play over 20 other instruments on her many independent albums. Each of her full-length albums come with self-illustrated coloring books which highlight her lyrics.
