Who sells the best cannabis in Massachusetts? Two won out in Cultivator’s Cup

State data shows that raw cannabis flower is the best selling product among its millions in weekly sales, and according to consumers and volunteer judges, two dispensaries from eastern Massachusetts have some of the best products in the state.

The results come from the state’s first Cultivator’s Cup, hosted by Solar and Cannabis event company the Farmacist in Somerset in early September. Solar had offered 200 “judge’s kits” containing 28 one-gram containers of marijuana flower from 16 dispensaries, sold through the month of August. These volunteer judges who purchased the kits could then vote on which of products were the best in four categories.

Of all the competitors, Natick-based Bountiful Farms and Stoneham-based Theory Wellness took home prizes in four categories, scoring for “best overall,” “best visual,” “best taste,” and “best cure.” The judges also ranked the runners up. See which products ranked best in the slideshow above.

“Not only did we find out what the people prefer when it comes to cannabis products, but we also brought together major sponsors from the alcohol and banking industry,” said Edward Dow, CEO of Solar, in a release. “I believe this is a sign of things to come within the cannabis market.”

The results are notable, given that state data shows that despite many of the innovations the cannabis market has brought — from edibles to seltzer drinks — the vast majority of cannabis purchased is still in the form of raw flower buds.

Between Aug. 30 and Sept. 5., the state tracked 742,000 sales equaling $30 million. Of those hundreds of thousands of sales, 31% was raw flower buds. Another 28% were spent on pre-rolled cannabis cigarettes containing raw cannabis.
