Los Angeles County to require patrons be vaccinated at nightclubs, bars, and outdoor megaevents

Los Angeles County announced Wednesday that it would roll out a new order that requires all guests of indoor nightclubs, bars, wineries, and outdoor megaevents to provide proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test within 72 hours of the event.

Patrons and employees will be mandated to have at least one dose of vaccine by Oct. 7 and receive their second by Nov. 4., according to the county’s public health director, Dr. Barbara Ferrer.

The order will also recommend that indoor dining at restaurants require proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test, though the order will not require it.

“This modified health officer order aligns with the continued need to reduce risk of transmission and increase vaccination coverage,” Ferrer told the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors. “This is a reasonable path forward that will position us to be better able to break the cycle of surges.”

The county has seen over 1.4 million cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic last year. However, the death rate has been relatively low at 25,713, according to the New York Times. California overall has seen 4.6 million cases of COVID-19 and 67,422 deaths.

Outdoor megaevents include sporting events, such as the return of major league baseball and NFL games. Any outdoor event with over 10,000 attendees is considered a megaevent. The vaccine mandate for outdoor events will go into effect Oct. 7.

Indoor events with over 5,000 attendees already require proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test in Los Angeles County.
