In the interview the conductor noted that during the pandemic, he reconsidered his relationship with the orchestra as well as with his family, which he rarely got to see due to touring.

The conductor also noted that during the pandemic he spent much of the time in Netherlands, his home country and he was isolated from the Philharmonic’s players and that impeded him from continuing to develop a rapport with the musicians.

The announcement comes during a season when the Philharmonic is playing at different venues around the city while David Geffen Hall is being reconstructed.

With Van Zweden’s departure, he will be the shortest tenured of any Philharmonic music director since Pierre Boulez.

The New York Philharmonic is set to open its season on Sept. 17 with Van Zweden conducting.
