Detectives with Vermont State Police have opened an investigation following the death of a woman in Killington. Authorities responded to multiple 911 calls reporting a gunshot injury just after 7 p.m. Wednesday on U.S. Route 4, according to a release from state police. Crews said 28-year-old Brittany Bouthiette, of Mount Holly, was pronounced dead at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. According to an initial investigation and witness statements, police said Bouthiette was a passenger in an SUV driven by her fiancé, 28-year-old Cody Ahonen. He told detectives she pulled out a semiautomatic handgun and, after a struggle over the weapon, shot herself.Both Ahonen and a passerby are reported to have called 911 following the incident. Police said the manner of Bouthiette's death is still listed as “pending” as the investigation continues.Anyone with additional information is asked to call the Vermont State Police Rutland barracks at 802-773-9101.Correction: This report was updated on Sept. 22 to show that Bouthiette and Ahonen were engaged to be married, according to paperwork provided by federal courts.
