The developing COVID-19 situation across the country has forced the start of the WBBL season to Tasmania.

Originally due to begin in Sydney on October 14, the first 20 matches of the 2021 campaign will now be hosted in the Apple Isle.

The competition remains committed to completing the full 59-game season, with Thursday's announcement evidence of the League's willingness to adapt in order to achieve that.

Hobart's Blundstone Arena and Launceston's UTas Stadium and Invermay Park will host the first portion of matches.

"We are delighted to take the opening fortnight of Weber WBBL07 to Tasmania, whose exceptional facilities and strong public health record – including hosting the opening stanza of KFC BBL10 - make it an ideal place to begin the season," Big Bash boss Alistair Dobson said.

"We know the Tasmanian public will come out in force throughout the season to see many of the world’s best in their own backyard.

"The League and all clubs thank Premier Gutwein and the Tasmanian Government for their support of the Weber WBBL and Australian cricket.

"We'd also like to thank Cricket Tasmania for the power of work they've put in to securing our safe passage to Tasmania and deliver the opening weeks of the tournament.

"We can’t wait to arrive in Hobart and start our season."
