MSoc vs. MiraCosta

OCC men's soccer team captain Danny Vargas makes his way up the field during the second half of the Pirates' 1-0 win over MiraCosta on Tuesday.

The Orange Coast College men’s soccer team kept a 1-0 clean sheet against visiting MiraCosta College after the offense succeeded early in Tuesday’s match.

Wasting no time at all, the OCC offense took control of the ball, moving it across the midfield into the possession of forward Danny Vargas who was racing down the left side. Vargas found an opening, confidently passed the ball over to forward Tino Varona, who netted the ball on a deflection within the first 30 seconds of gameplay.

Both teams’ offenses found themselves losing contact with the back of the net after the opening goal. Fortunately, a solid defensive performance by OCC goalie Luke Fyvie, who recorded three saves, stinted the Spartans’ success in scoring, keeping the game in the Pirate’s favor.

“I believe this group has heart and talent,” OCC captain Danny Vargas said. “We all have goals to win conference and state.”

Assistant Coach Glenn Strachan said that OCC’s focus in their upcoming matches is “keeping the ball a little more” after seeing his players “giving the ball away a little bit cheaply at times.”

With this victory over MiraCosta, the Pirates improved their record to (3-1-1) before conference games begin on September 28 against Santiago Canyon.
