Never in my life did I think that a suit would be the favorite garment of Stella Ishii. Those who know the 6397 founder know that she’s a jeans and tees kind of woman and that her brand is built, as the best brands are, in its founder’s own image. But when asked what the key piece from her new collection was, Ishii responded without hesitation that it is a roomy new suit.

Chalk it up to a new designer and production team who together have been fitting the entire new collection on both a model and on Ishii to engineer the perfect oversized slouch. The suit, in olive green, is best paired with board shorts and Birkenstocks—it’s a new kind of New York uniform that’s taken the comfort of WFH dressing and given it a little dressed-up zhuzh. Swing-back trench coats, day dresses in a camouflage-inspired floral, and a shimmering plaid anorak round out the look. There is a formality and doneness to the collection that the grungy, tomboyish 6397 customer might not be totally used to just yet, but the sensibility of this collection of architectural basics is right. The sweatpants forever ideology has given way to the urge to finesse one’s ’fit; 6397 has plenty of new pieces to do just that.
