West Chester Rustin’s Dayshawn Jacobs wins fan vote as Pa.’s high school football player of the week

West Chester Rustin's Dayshawn Jacobs won this week's fan vote as Pa.'s high school football player of the week. And, yes, he said those are the lucky, blue-and-white socks that helped get the job done. (Photo courtesy of Dayshawn Jacobs)

Maybe it was the offensive line. Maybe it was the lucky socks. Maybe Dashawn Jacobs is just pretty, darned good at football.

And, just maybe, it was all three.

Whatever the winning combo, Jacobs was able to take the top spot in the fan vote for Pennsylvania’s Player of the Week — sponsored by Renewal by Andersen of Central PA — for games played Sept. 10-11.

It’s tough to be better than the senior West Chester Rustin running back was in leading his team to a 42-14 win over West Chester Henderson. Consider, he averaged nearly 25 yards per carry, rushing for 246 yards and three touchdowns to help his team improve to 1-1.

“Our line was doing great, and everyone was just firing on all cylinders,” Jacobs told PennLive. “And … I had the lucky socks.”

That’s right.

Jacobs gives the blue-and-white striped, knee-highs some credit. Look good, play good, after all.

The impressive numbers didn’t end on the field for Jacobs, though.

More than 15,540 votes were cast for this week’s honor, and a little more than 40 percent — 6,292 votes — went to Jacobs. Turns out, the whole community got behind him.

“All of my family, friends and teammates,” he said. “Everyone put it on social media, and the school district even sent out an email that really helped us.

“It was great (to have everyone behind me),” he added. “It felt amazing, especially to get so much support from my family and friends. I just love them.”

Conrad Weiser receiver Aanjay Feliciano (4,876 votes) was second followed by Fox Chapel running back Zidane Thomas (1,205), Wyoming Area quarterback Blaise Sokach-Minnick (611) and Governor Mifflin running back Nicholas Singleton (546).
