EUGENE — Oregon has relied solely on Anthony Brown Jr. at quarterback through the first two games but that figures to change on Saturday.
The No. 4 Ducks (2-0) are in an epic mismatch against Stony Brook (1-1) and multiple signal callers could make their debuts once Brown is out of the game.
Oregon has listed Ty Thompson, Jay Butterfield and Robby Ashford as co-backups for each of the first three weeks, though Mario Cristobal said the staff has determined who the backup is entering Saturday’s game (4:30 p.m., Pac-12 Network).
“We’ll release that come closer to game time,” Cristobal said.
With cornerback Jaylin Davies changing numbers to No. 14, he can now play on special teams with wide receiver Jaylon Redd and more importantly, Ashford is now permitted to play as Oregon no longer has three players wearing No. 6. Ashford and Redd can play together only if one of them changes jerseys.
Cristobal said players who earn playing time will get on the field.
“It’s not somebody’s right,” he said. “It’s someone’s duty and obligation to earn that time throughout camp, the course of the week. We’re going to go with that approach.”
