The Taliban gave Fox News reporter Trey Yingst an exclusive tour of a prison in Kabul where they say they recently freed thousands of their fighters. He spoke with members of the group from Logar province.
Though they did not allow Fox News’s cameras inside the prison, Yingst spoke with a top Taliban intelligence official named Niaz Mohammed Halim, who served a four-year sentence at the prison.
The Fox News reporter asked Halim about the fate of the Americans who remain stranded in Afghanistan.
He responded by saying that “everyone is safe.” Hamil also dismissed reports suggesting that there is infighting going on among senior Taliban leadership.
“People to top-level officials, everyone obeys the rule of the Taliban emirate. There is no infighting,” said Halim. “What we order here in Kabul is implemented in all provinces. That is propaganda of the enemy.”
The U.S. withdrew from the country ahead of an August 31 deadline set by President Joe Biden. But the Taliban retook control of Kabul before the U.S. could complete its evacuation of military personnel, as well as U.S. and Afghan civilians who were hoping to leave. Chaos ensued at the Hamid Karzai International Airport as the U.S. scrambled to airlift as many people out as possible.
Just days before the withdrawal, a suicide bomber killed 13 U.S. service members and more than 170 Afghan civilians.
