'Mistakes happen in football': Jesse Lingard admits he is 'hurt' and 'upset' after his poor backpass caused Manchester United's defeat at Young Boys in their Champions League opener

Jesse Lingard has admitted he is 'hurt' after his crucial mistake that caused Manchester United to lose their opening Champions League group match with Young Boys on Tuesday. 

The Manchester United midfielder played an awful backpass to David de Gea which allowed Jordan Siebatcheu to crash home a 95-minute winner for the Swiss side, which ended up being the last kick of the game.

Lingard had only just come onto the pitch as a late replacement for superstar Cristiano Ronaldo and while the 28-year-old is 'upset' by the last-minute error, he maintains that 'mistakes happen in football. 

'Last night hurt,' he tweeted on Wednesday afternoon. 'Everytime I pull on the shirt, I hope people understand what it means to me. 

'I always go out wanting to do the best for the club, the team and the fans. I’m upset for my part in the defeat. 

'Mistakes happen in football but we pick ourselves up and go again.'

The match saw United completely dominated by Swiss side Young Boys, despite Ronaldo giving Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side an early lead from Bruno Fernandes' exquisite cross after 13 minutes. 

The European tie turned on its head later in the first-half as Aaron Wan-Bissaka was given a straight red card for a high and dangerous tackle on Young Boys midfielder Christopher Martins. 

David Wagner's Swiss minnows then used the extra man to their advantage and Moumi Ngamaleu tapped home an equaliser on 66 minutes to up the pressure further on the English side.

And with United seemingly standing firm for a well-earned point in Bern, their hard-work was unravelled when Lingard's backpass tried to find goalkeeper De Gea but instead fell into the path of  Siebatcheu, who crashed home past the Spanish goalkeeper. 

The result means Solskjaer's United are now bottom of Group F after the first round of fixtures, with five matches remaining in their challenge with the Swiss side, Villarreal and Atalanta.

The Red Devils are hoping to avoid a repeat of last season when they exited the Champions League group stages with Paris Saint-Germain, RB Leipzig and Istanbul Basaksehir in front of them.
